H-M O

(Hanna-Mari Ojala) is a self-taught music artist (and poet, filmmaker, and movement researcher) from Oulu, Finland, who has found her way of creative expression through experimental music, dance, and video poetry. She loves composing worlds with sounds, much like painting with vibes or translating energies into tunes, and she especially enjoys making experimental electronic music because of its freedom. She savors turning actual events into something more abstract and describes the visceral effects of inner emotions – making invisible visible and visible indefinite. ”I am an artist who loves to surprise herself by combining elements that create something completely unexpected. I call it a divine coincidence’ when two or more seemingly separate things complement each other to form a whole new entity larger and more complex than its parts (usually, I recognize this happening by having chills up and down my spine). Because I started making music from a place of childlike curiosity and a desire to play, I think my sound is entirely free and expressive. I also strive for complete honesty when creating music, which I hope translates into unique sounds and original lyrics. I also use field recordings in most songs and improvise in my singing, producing an organic ambiance.”

H-M O’s Sacred Garden is an intimate and transformative acapella EP that invites listeners to explore voice, vulnerability, and self-discovery deeply. Comprised of three tracks—Three, Six, and Seven—the EP is a collection of songs and a unique experiment in layering and expanding the human voice. At its core, Sacred Garden is one song, revisited and transformed across three takes, each deepening and growing as layers of sound are added. The tracks’ names are a nod to this process, literally describing the number of vocal layers in each piece.

Entirely improvised, Sacred Garden strips away all instrumentation to leave only Hanna Ojala’s voice, a raw and fragile instrument that builds on itself in spirals of sound. The songs evolve from abstract tones to harmonies and, finally, to words until a poem floats delicately above the ocean of voices. This EP celebrates the sacred and fragile nature of the voice as a pure form of human expression.

For Hanna, voice has always been the most vulnerable part of her artistic identity, representing fear, fragility, and courage. “For years, I was beyond afraid of using my voice—afraid it would crack, sound out of tune, or simply not be enough,” she shares. “To sing, let alone improvise with my voice, felt impossible. But after years of inner work and self-acceptance, I’ve come to terms with my voice just as it is. This EP feels like a beautiful and hazy dream come true, celebrating learning to love myself exactly as I am.”

Sacred Garden is a testament to this journey of self-acceptance, offering listeners an unfiltered and deeply personal experience. H-M O’s voice doesn’t just sing—it tells a story of growth, healing, and transformation. With its minimalist yet profound approach, the EP invites audiences to reflect on their vulnerabilities and the beauty of embracing imperfection.
This is not just an EP—it’s a heartfelt offering, a celebration of voice, and a humble yet powerful reminder of the strength of embracing one’s authentic self.

"Human Display", crafted by the multifaceted Finnish artist H-M O (Hanna-Mari Ojala), is a monumental exploration of the human condition through the lens of experimental electronic music. This album, birthed from the serene yet vibrant landscapes of Oulu, Finland, encapsulates a journey that traverses the vast spectrum of human emotions and experiences, reflecting Ojala's profound engagement with her surroundings and inner life. Her approach to music creation, deeply rooted in a blend of self-taught expertise and an innate curiosity, brings forth a sound that is both innovative and expressive.

The album starts with "Welcome to Forever", a track that immediately immerses listeners in its expansive and introspective theme. This opening piece sets a tone of eternal beginnings, inviting the audience into a space where time stretches infinitely and every moment holds the weight of forever.

"Martial Law of Nature" follows, delving into the inherent chaos and order within the natural world. Through a fusion of electronic beats and ambient sounds, Ojala explores the primal forces that govern life, evoking a sense of awe and reflection on our place within the natural order.

"Dragon Machine" transports listeners to a realm of mythical energy, intertwining digital sounds with the ethereal to craft a narrative of power and transformation. This track embodies the mystical journey of discovery, where ancient lore meets the modern soundscape, creating a bridge between the past and the present.

In "Shadows" the album turns introspective, navigating the complexities of solitude and the unseen aspects of our psyche. This piece invites a contemplation of the parts of ourselves that only emerge in the quiet, often overlooked but profoundly influential in our lives.

"I" continues the introspective journey, examining the feeling of voidness and the richness that can be found in silence. Through minimalist compositions and subtle sound textures, Ojala captures the paradox of emptiness as a space brimming with potential.

"Sauma" and "Fern Forest" celebrate the natural world, blending field recordings with synthesized sounds to create an immersive experience of being in unison with nature. These tracks stand as odes to the earth, highlighting the deep connection between human emotions and the natural landscape.

As the album progresses towards "Working Woods" and "Tree of Life", there is a palpable shift towards themes of growth, resilience, and the interconnectedness of all life forms. These pieces embody the cyclical nature of existence, where every end is a beginning, and every living being is part of a larger, intricate tapestry.

"The Fall" and "Broken Body" delve into the vulnerability and resilience of the human spirit. These tracks explore the depths of personal struggle and the beauty of overcoming, reflecting the strength of vulnerability and music's healing power.

"Rauha", Finnish for peace, offers a serene respite, a meditative piece that conjures a sense of tranquility and harmony. It serves as a reminder of the calm that comes after the storm, the peace found within after navigating life's tumultuous waters.

The album concludes with "Break Free My Stagnant Soul" and "The Journey" which encapsulate the essence of liberation and the ongoing nature of the human experience. These pieces resonate with a message of hope and renewal, urging listeners to break free from constraints and embrace the endless journey of life.

"Human Display" is not just an album; it is an invitation to embark on a profound exploration of life, a reminder of the beauty and complexity of the human experience, and a testament to Hanna-Mari Ojala's unparalleled ability to weave together sound, emotion and thought into a cohesive and deeply moving narrative.

Hanna-Mari Ojala, known artistically as H-M O, invites listeners into her most personal sonic realm with "The Lamenting Window." A self-taught marvel from Oulu, Finland, Ojala's repertoire spans experimental music, dance, and video poetry, painting worlds with sounds and translating energies into tunes. With a penchant for experimental electronic music, she crafts her compositions with the freedom to explore the abstract and the visceral, turning the tangible into the intangible and vice versa. Through her unique blend of sounds, Ojala strives to create what she describes as "divine coincidences"—moments where disparate elements unite to form a complex, new entity, often marked by a chilling realization of their unexpected harmony.

"The Lamenting Window" stands as Ojala's most raw and revealing work, embodying the essence of a singer-songwriter album unlike any she has produced. It navigates the emotional landscape from heartbreak to hope, encapsulating a poetic journey that resonates with the transformative power of healing. The album begins and concludes within the same auditory space, though the internal journey it represents evolves profoundly from start to finish.

Drawing upon poems penned during her younger years, Ojala transforms these written expressions into musical pieces, infusing the album with a deeply therapeutic essence. This process of musical alchemy has not only been a means of personal healing for Ojala but is also extended as an offering of solace to her listeners. Each track serves as a step on a path through darkness towards light, inviting those who hear it to find peace and resolution within its melodies.

The album unfolds with "When I Want It to Scream," a track that plunges into the desire to express the turmoil within outwardly. It is followed by "Call for My Soul to Come Back," a poignant invocation for inner healing and restoration. "For the Birds (of Prayer)" emerges as a contemplative piece, reflecting a longing for spiritual guidance and connection with nature. The journey continues with "Fireflies," a song that captures fleeting moments of hope and beauty amidst the shadows. The album concludes with "Birds & Bees," a track that weaves themes of renewal and the intricate dance between longing and fulfillment, rounding off a journey from despair to the hopeful embrace of a new dawn.
